Based On Children: To measure preadolescents' views of family control of behavior, Hawkes and his associates (67, 1957) have constructed two forms of a questionnaire type of scale, one consisting of items based on children's typical responses and the other based on competent judges' ranking of the responses from the most healthful to the least healthful means of controlling children's behavior. According to these scales, groups of rural and small town children in the fifth grade seemed to perceive control of their behavior as not unduly restrictive; they were reasonably satisfied with their home conditions and relationships.

Most boys double in strength between six and eleven years of age, more so than girls. Jones (81, 1949) made a developmental study of four aspects of children of strength—strength of grip of right hand and of left hand, strength of pull with dynamometer held against the chest, and strength of thrust or push also with dynamometer held against the chest. He studied these aspects of children of strength in 183 children ranging from the fifth grade to the senior year of high school. Boys showed marked increases in strength during the growth spurt of preadolescent years.
