Annual Growth Rate: The growth of the British economy—measured conventionally as the compound annual growth rate rate of growth of the gross national product per head-has averaged since 1950 about 2.5%, or about one half the rates of other industrialized econ¬omies. Productivity in manufacturing has grown at a slightly higher rate than in the service sec¬tor, and in some sectors of manufacturing (chem¬icals and motors, for example) much faster than in others (textile and food industries).
annual growth rate Growth.—An individual tree located in a favorable situation grows relatively slowly as a seedling, and rather faster as a sapling and young tree. However, upon reaching maturity, the rate of annual growth rate growth decreases to a low level. This pattern of behavior is well illustrated in the decreasing width of the annual growth rate growth rings of mature and old trees. There is relative uni¬formity in the over-all patterns of growth of various tree species, although the actual patterns may differ widely in individual trees of different species. For example, individual Sitka spruce trees in the Pacific Northwest may continue to grow rapidly in height and diameter at 150 years of age, whereas red spruce trees in northeastern North America have reached maturity in less than 100 years, and will grow a negligible amount in subsequent years.See Also Rapid Growth Of Towns:The development of the steam engine based on power from coal greatly contributed to the establishment of a whole range of new indus¬tries and to the rapid growth of towns to house an expanding population of factory workers. As the transport of manufactured goods became more important, canals, rail¬ways and roads cut across the land. The search for building materials accelerated as world population grew from about 900 million in 1800 to 1,650 million in 1900.
One undersized boy felt much better when the school physician explained that the X-ray pictures of his wrist bones showed that he had not yet reached his nhysical maturity and that he would undoubtedly grow taller. Rapid acceleration in the rate of growth puts an additional strain on the vital organs and requires protection against overexertion. Uneven growth may create problems of awkwardness and self-consciousness. Inappropriate growth, as in the case of the boy who develops feminine contours, presents still more serious problems of adjustment.
On The Other Hand See Charges And Growth:Both the vacuum tube and the transistor need a flow of electrical charges and growth to operate. In the vacuum tube, the filament —a hot, glowing wire—spews forth negative charges and growth into its evacuated enclosure. In semiconductor devices, however, both negative and positive charges and growth are produced within the crystal¬line structure of a solid without heating.
