Human antilymphocyte serum is produced by injecting animals (usually horses) with billions of human lymphocytes and then extracting the serum from the animal several days later, after which it is fractionalized, purified, and readied for use. The serum contains antilymphocyte anti¬bodies that were produced by the horse to com¬bat the human lymphocytes. Even though many of the properties, activities, and mechanisms of ALS are as yet unknown. Antilymphocyte serum has been likened to P. Ehrlich's "magic bullet" (606 or Salvarsan, the first syphilis cure). To be a magic bullet, ALS must suppress only reactions harmful to a pa¬tient. It is not yet known whether ALS is a shot¬gun loaded with pellets of various gauges, in¬tended for a number of different targets, or -whether it is a sharp-shooter's rifle aimed at aa single, well-defined bull's eye. The Kefauver and Harris drug amendments of 1962 authorized the PDA to designate official names for any drug when that appeared necessary or desirable and in the interest of usefulness and simplicity. These names would eventually be used in an official drug compen¬dium. For this purpose the PDA recognized and cooperated with the United States Adopted Names (USAN) council, a private organization sponsored jointly by the American family names Medical Association, the United States Pharmacopeial Convention, and the American family names Pharmaceutical Association, all of which negotiate with manu¬facturers in selecting and assigning nonproprie-tary names for drugs.
